WWF's "Eco-Manager 2006":
Bosch the First Automotive Company Granted the Environmental Award
  • WWF praises the Bosch Group's outstanding and innovative commitment to environmental protection and energy-saving
  • Bosch Automotive Innovations - oriented toward environmental protection and energy-saving
  • In China, Bosch has dedicated 54 full-time staff to implement its HSE (health, safety and environment) management system

January 15, 2007, Shanghai – Franz Fehrenbach (57), Chairman of the Bosch Board of Management, received the "Eco-manager of the year 2006" award in late 2006. The international environmental foundation WWF Germany and the magazine Capital award this title to business people who show exemplary commitment to environmental protection and sustainable, resource-conserving development.

In awarding the prize, judges praised the "Bosch Group's outstanding and innovative commitment to environmental protection," said Prof. Detlev Drenckhahn, president of the WWF in Germany. Other key factors for the decision included the fact that the Bosch Group has made protection of the environment and conservation of resources a long-term cornerstone of its overall strategy.

“I’m delighted with this award. It is recognition for the entire company and for all our associates,” said Franz Fehrenbach, Chairman of the Board of Management. “I'm particularly pleased that the judges have given the award for the first time to a company from the automotive industry, thus recognizing this sector's commitment and that of Bosch in particular to environmental protection.”

Fehrenbach also quoted one of his favorite philosophers, Odo Marquard, who said "the future needs a past," to illustrate Bosch's long tradition of innovation aimed at protecting the environment. Robert Bosch, the founder of the Bosch Group already in 1930s was a firm believer in achieving the best possible balance between ensuring Bosch's long-term existence and addressing present societal and environmental concerns.

Bosch Automotive Innovations - oriented toward environmental protection and energy-saving

In conducting business and developing new products, Bosch has a history of thinking far beyond the short term. In order to continue developing innovative technologies, Bosch invests heavily. In 2005 alone, in the Automotive Technology business sector Bosch invested 9.6 percent of its sales revenue in R&D.

In China, all of Bosch's activities comply with the companies' "3S Principle" – Sicher (safe), Sauber (clean), Sparsam (economical) and are complementary to the goals of Energy Saving and Environmental Friendliness of the “11th5 Year” Plan.

In Wuxi, Bosch manufactures state-of-the-art modern Diesel Technology: the Common-Rail High-Pressure Diesel Injection System. The low consumption and high performance properties of modern diesel engines are commonly recognized. They set a new standard in terms of cleanliness, economy and high-efficiency.

As of mid-2007, all vehicles in China will be required to comply with stricter fuel consumption and emission regulations such as the National III standards. Bosch recently established a Diesel Competence Center in Wuxi to actively provide local Chinese diesel engine manufacturers with product and technology support and help them meet these stricter emission regulations.

In fact, according to a study released by Development Research Center of China's State Council in April of 2006, i t is estimated that the total auto population in China will reach 150 million in the year 2020. If 30% of the overall vehicle car population in 2020 were to be equipped with modern Diesel technology , a decrease of 10% of imported oil could be achieved and a reduction of 42 million metric tons of Carbon Dioxide emission could be realized.

The Health, Safety, Environment Program (HSE) - a Bosch Integrated Management System to safeguard the environment and to save energy

The first guideline on environmental protection applicable to all Bosch sites around the world was adopted as early as 1973. To ensure the Bosch Group's Corporate Health, Safety and Environmental standards and local legislation requirements are met, a network of 54 HSE Bosch associates is working together throughout China to conduct HSE training, audit Bosch sites and continually improve HSE implementation and performance.

Bosch has also implemented the certification system based on the International Environmental Management Standard ISO 14001 and an internal HSE database annual audit and report system. Bosch is also actively auditing and carrying out progress-tracking programs to ensure every one of our sites complies with internal standards.

Moreover, beginning in early 2006, Bosch began conducting HSE audits on all of its suppliers around the globe. By the end of 2006 Bosch had audited a total of 31 suppliers in China. Such audits have become an important component of Bosch's long-term policies.

Bosch founded its first trading office in China as early as 1909. “ Although Bosch is a German Company,” said Mr. Peter Pang, President of Bosch ( China) Investment Ltd., “ China has long been home for many of its associates. Environmentally friendly development in China is an inextricable part of our commitment to environmental protection globally, which has now been recognized by the Eco-Manager Award.”
